In the Vineyard

In the Vineyard (devotional thoughts)

I love John 15:1-17. Jesus is an extraordinary teacher. He is the master illustrator. He says "I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser." Think on that for a second. Vine. Vinedresser. Why did he pick this illustration? Flip over to John 18:1. It's very possible that Jesus and his disciples were actually walking through an orchard in the Kidron Valley on their way to the garden of Gethsemene. Jesus took the opportunity to give his disciples a vivid picture of what it means to be connected to the Father through him. I love to picture myself walking across the Kidron Valley, hearing these words straight from the mouth of Jesus, "I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing." He made us to bear fruit. There is not a branch on the Vine that the Father intended for mediocrity. Every branch is designed to bear abundant fruit. As we abide in the Vine, his joy is in us and our joy is made full. Come to the Father through Jesus Christ. Rest. Stay. Dwell. It's Jesus' way of saying, "you belong here with me."
