Me

I'm probably a lot like you. Unless you're a guy. I'm a girl who wants to get the most out of life by giving back to the world.  I pour all of who I am into everything I do.  Half-hearted doesn't really make sense to me.  St. Catherine of Siena said "If you are what you should be, you will set the world on fire."  Well, I don't know about setting the world on fire, but there is a fire in me to blaze ahead toward Christ with my whole heart.  If I don't write songs, if I don't sing them, if I don't let the music inside me come out, I think I'll burn up on the inside like Jeremiah said he would if he didn't speak what God gave him to speak. I love it and can't wait to do more of it...wherever that may bring me.

I've been singing for as long as I can remember.  I was up in front of the church singing solos when I was four years old.  My mom and dad would play guitar and sing with my brother, sister and I for hours when we were growing up. Those were my greatest memories of music making its way into my soul...along with unending car rides listening to my parent's favorite albums and teaching myself how to sing harmony as I rode along.

I also taught myself how to play guitar...and as much as I think that's gotten me somewhere, I'm really a piano player at heart.  I started playing keys when I was 8 -- Lessons with the neighborhood piano teacher who tried to teach me how to play by finger numbers.  That didn't go far, so my ear took over. Years and years of lessons with other great teachers have led me to where I am, and I couldn't be more thankful for their work to pour into me.

As a teenager, I listened to and played all sorts of music and realized that the message and sound of a song have the power to depress or to encourage the soul. I began seeking out music that would lead me to sit with thoughts that would help me not hurt me.  I would say at that point, I turned to the greats of Christian music and my passion grew for songs that speak truth and uplift the soul. Worship songs changed my life and led me to think on what is right, noble, pure, all those good things from Phil 4:8!

The church has been a constant in my life since the day I was born... showing me the gospel, how real Jesus is, and the truth that my heart desperately needs every day.  I am weak. I need Him to carry me. The Christian life is a journey of reliance not on myself, but on Christ.  The songs we sing in the church have deeply impacted my life. They brought me through some of the hardest times in life, moving from state to state as a kid, clinging to the stability of truth in unfamiliar places.

All along, it's been God's mighty hand shaping me through my family, the church, and lots of experiences with music.  This is what fuels me to sing the kind of songs I sing and to write the way I do.  In a world that is shakable, I stand on an unshakeable foundation in Christ and I want to tell that story by the way I live and the songs I write.
